INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE QUINQUENNIAL SURVEY
|
The American Rose Society conducts the Quinquennial Survey as a means of updating the published ratings on
rose cultivars that have previously completed the Roses in Review process and have been in commerce for some time.
The thinking is that the performance of these cultivars may have changed since they were last rated. The rating might need to go down
due to an actual decline in performance as the plants and bud stock have aged, or in a relative manner when compared to newer
cultivars recently introduced to the rose world. On the other hand, the rating might need to go up as more experience
with the cultivar has shown better performance as the plant became extablished, or as a result of virus-free stock
producing better results. The ARS ratings are published in the Handbook for Selecting Roses as a guide to the rose growing public in choosing varieties for their gardens. We certainly want to give these rosarians the latest information on the performance of the various cultivars so they have the best chance possible to choose roses that will be successful for them. There are several important items you should note. First, the ratings shown are the GARDEN ratings for each cultivar. They do not reflect their performance as exhibition roses. In deciding upon your rating for each cultivar, you should consider such items as the vigor and growth habit of the plant, the number of blooms and how quickly it repeats, the beauty and lasting quality of the blooms in the garden, fragrance, disease resistance, winter hardiness, quality of the foliage, and so forth. Exhibition performance should not be considered. Second, please do not use the "No Change" response too freely. Given the differences in growing conditions throughout the country, it is difficult to believe the majority of the current ratings are exactly right for any one garden. Please rate the varieties you feel confident in rating. Do not use "No Change" as a stand-in for "I don't know". Finally, only rate those varieties you have grown in your own garden during the last five years, or those you have been able to observe carefully and continually in another garden during the same five year period. Do not rate varieties from memory that you last grew many years ago. If you have any questions, you may contact Phil Schorr at the address shown above or by e-mail at pschorr@worldnet.att.net. Thanks for your participation! |
